On Audubon Street in New Haven, four floors up in an office building, is the understated hive of Husky "Hoop-de-doo," as one manager at WorldTek Travel called it.

When UConn donors call for Final Four packages, this is where the calls go. WorldTek sells packages of airline tickets, hotel rooms and game tickets to fans who have come to count on a trip to the women's basketball Final Four.

"It's a pretty sure bet every year that they're gonna be there," said Dave Smith, who went to his first Final Four for WorldTek and UConn nearly 20 years ago.

WorldTek sold out of the men's basketball packages on Monday.

Smith said the Huskies' presence in North Texas has come as a happy surprise, boosting the intensity of sales to begin with, because it was unexpected on the men's side.

UConn donors have been making their choice between Final Fours. Some choose both, as Smith did in 2004.

"I went back and forth between San Antonio on the men's side and New Orleans on the women's side, and traveled back and forth, both semifinals and finals, which was a thrill," he said.

Several major U.S. airlines have announced new and expanded domestic routes for 2026, responding to continued demand for leisure travel within the United States. Carriers including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines are increasing service to popular vacation markets such as Florida, Arizona, Colorado, and coastal California.

Do's and Don'ts of a European Christmas Market Trip

You can’t actually celebrate Christmas in July in Europe… but it’s the perfect time to plan a Christmas market visit to celebrate the season. There really is no better way to get into the spirit of the holidays than to immerse yourself in the markets, traditions, food, beverages, arts and crafts of the lands and cultures that shaped our own holiday celebrations.

But take these tips to make sure you get the best of the best holiday – and holiday experience!

DO: Take a river cruise.

Germany, Austria, Switzerland and even France are some of the best places to travel to capture the joy of Europe’s Christmas markets. And the best way to visit multiple Christmas markets – even in multiple countries, only unpack once – and have someone else do the driving! Is to take a river cruise. For river cruisers, the two big options are the Danube, especially in Germany and Austria, and the Rhine, between Switzerland, into Germany, France and the Netherlands.

DO: Indulge in the taste of Christmas, Europe-style

In German Christmas markets, that means sausage, many types of sausage. And pretzels. But there are also uniquely seasonal market treats: gingerbread, often in heart shapes, with heart-warming messages like “I love you.” Or marzipan (sweet almond paste) shapes, especially in the lucky pig shape of the German region of Bavaria. Or delicious marzipan-stuffed fruit bread, stollen.

Leave room to taste your way through markets and skip a meal on your river cruise ship!

DO: Sip the festive flavors.

Goodbye, hot chocolate. Gluhwein is the warm, spiced wine so famous in German and neighboring countries’ Christmas markets. The classic version is red wine, but you can also find white wine, and look for a citrusy French version in the Noel market of the French Alsace region.

DO: Buy hand-made local Christmas souvenirs.

You and your loved ones will always remember the hand-painted, hand-blown glass Christmas ornament from the European Christmas market. Do you have little ones in the family? Hand-carved wooden toys become family heirlooms to pass on through the generations… with a story!

Candles, boiled wool tea cozies, wool scarves and shawls all warm the heart on a mid-winter’s night, as do memories of your Christmas market visit.

DON’T Miss the opportunity to take home a memory of Christmas markets.

Everyone is trying to pack lighter these days, with smaller and smaller suitcases. Don’t deny yourself a memory of your Christmas market odyssey because your bag is too small to take even one thing home. I get it, you don’t want clutter, so get something consumable and ideally, shareable with friends and loved ones instead of another object to display, dust and ultimately, store.

DO: Pack layers.

Winter isn’t a Nordic/ Arctic winter in most of these countries, so you won’t see much snow, but you will notice a real cold damp that can pack a punch. The only solution is waterproof footwear and insulating layers, with a windproof and waterproof outer layer against the damp and the cold. You can always layer down, but it’s hard to warm up once you’re cold, so this is your best way to ensure the weather doesn’t dampen your Christmas cheer.

Have some vintage or faux fur? Now's the time to get it out of the back of the closet and put a stylish foot forward in Europe!

DON’T: Forget personal security.

It's easy to be caught up in the joy of the moment. But, as everywhere, crowds can bring out the wrong type of people. Make sure your cash and credit cards are secure. Never leave your bag hanging on the back of your chair, or your wallet in a back pocket. Be mindful of people getting too close to you. Use good sense to avoid a bad taste in your mouth from an unfortunate encounter with people looking to cash in on Christmas crowds.

DON’T: Wait to plan now for a Christmas market trip.

Use your Christmas market trip to get into the spirit of the season – and even do all your shopping in Europe, to cut down the stress of getting ready for the holidays at home. This 10-day Private Jet Journey Lets You Chase the Northern Lights

If you’ve ever dreamed of soaring into the Arctic North to chase the northern lights, now is your chance.

TCS World Travel is launching a luxury 10-day private jet tour to Scandinavia, beginning in Washington, D.C., with stops in Iceland, Norway, and Finland. The trip will include off-the-beaten-path destinations that have been chosen for their remote beauty, access to wildlife, or cultural significance.

Next, the group zips over to Norway to experience the country’s wild fjords of Hjørundfjord. There, the participants have the choice to kayak in the bay, go wine tasting, visit a floating sauna, or try snowshoeing. On this two-day leg of the trip there will be a private fishing excursion, as well as an opportunity to learn about locally farmed Norwegian cuisine in the fjord village of Glomset. Travelers stay in the town of Ålesund, which is spread out across seven small islands.

The last leg of the trip takes guests to Rovaniemi, Finland, for three nights to stay in an arctic treehouse and catch the northern lights in the company of a guide. During the day, travelers experience the winter of Lapland by snowmobiling through the wilderness, visiting a sled dog farm, snowshoeing to a remote ice fishing spot, and floating in the arctic waters in a specially designed dry suit. There is also an opportunity to stop at Santa Claus Village to see St. Nick’s hometown.

NEW YORK (AP) — When limits on liquids were introduced at TSA checkpoints across the country in 2006, bins overflowed with bottled water, toothpaste, shaving cream and so much more. Nearly two decades later, travelers are much more accustomed to the “3-1-1” regulations” governing the size of the liquids they’re flying with, but scenes of passengers guzzling a beverage before putting their bags through the screening machines are still common.

That’s why Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem sent ripples through the traveling public when she said earlier this week that changes might be afoot when it comes to the TSA’s current liquid limits.

“The liquids, I’m questioning. So that may be the next big announcement, is what size your liquids need to be,” Noem told a conference hosted by “The Hill” in Washington.

Will travelers be able to carry bigger bottles? Multiple 1-quart bags of liquids? Those details haven’t been rolled out. But coming on top of her announcement earlier this month that travelers could keep their shoes on at TSA checkpoints, it seems a much different security experience for American air travelers might be emerging.

9/11 and its aftermath changed much

Airline travel changed dramatically after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Before that, airlines were responsible for security and would often contract it out to private firms, said Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group. Travelers often didn’t need to show their ID at security checkpoints — and people without boarding passes, such as family members or friends, could go to the gate in some locations.

“It was much more casual. And clearly it was ineffective, because 9/11 occurred,” Harteveldt said.

That’s when the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration were born, with the mandate of preventing more terrorist attacks.

The liquid limits, however, didn’t kick in until 2006, after authorities foiled a plot that used liquid explosives smuggled aboard carry-on luggage. The TSA then very briefly banned all liquids in carry-on luggage. That ban lasted about six weeks, but strained airlines’ baggage systems as more and more travelers turned to checked bags to pack toiletries.

At the time the 3.4-ounce limit was implemented, the FBI and other laboratories had found that tiny amounts of substances small enough to fit into a quart-size bag couldn’t blow up an airliner.

When the ban was eventually lifted in September 2006, consumers and businesses alike had to learn how to adapt to the 3-1-1 rule — leading to more demand for smaller, travel size bottles of anything from shampoo to toothpaste, as well as clear, “TSA approved” toiletry bags that are still seen on store shelves today.

The rule was also adopted in many countries around the world starting later that year.

Keith Jeffries, a former TSA director at Los Angeles International Airport and now vice president of K2 Security Screening Group, says whatever comes next needs to be clear for passengers. And he knows whereof he speaks.

Jeffries was working for TSA in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when the liquids rules came down overnight. Signage had to be changed to let passengers know of the new regulations. Barrels overflowing with toothpaste, shaving cream and shampoo had to be emptied every half hour. Jeffries remembers seeing a pair of shoes sitting in one of the barrels.

When he asked why, a TSA staffer said there was gel in the soles. “I said, ‘Please tell me I don’t have a passenger back there walking in the sterile area barefoot. And he says, ‘No, sir, they still have their socks on,’” he said. “That’s how chaotic it was.”

It’s about more than convenience

Any move to simplify the screening process and cut down on the time it takes for passengers to navigate checkpoints would be a welcome change for everyone, Harteveldt says. Because it isn’t just about convenience; those lines before the security checkpoints are the most at risk to a potential threat.

The fact that the TSA felt confident enough to change its shoe policy earlier this month may not save too much time from an individual traveler’s perspective, Harteveldt notes — but marks a “big step forward” toward cutting down the average length of the security process when you think about the number of people going through U.S. airports each day. Relaxing current liquid restrictions could aid that effort. Still, questions remain. “What we don’t know is what the secretary is going to announce about liquids,” Harteveldt said. “Will they remove the liquid ban altogether — and can we go back to bringing full-sized of toiletries and other items with us? Will they allow people to bring more than one bag of toiletries and liquids? And importantly, will they relax the limit on (the) quart-size bag itself?’”

It’s also possible that the changes the TSA makes, whatever they are, only start at a handful of airports that have the technology to do so. Over the years, airports worldwide have adopted some aspects of security screenings faster or differently than others.

But travelers could be confused if they’re able to bring a full-size bottle of shampoo or lotion when flying out of one airport, for example, but not on their return trip home.

“The devil is going to be in the details,” Harteveldt said. “That’s why the rollout plan will be absolutely critical.”

Harveldt says a more streamlined process could make travelers less stressed, but others — including flight attendants and pilots who are in the skies more frequently — may object and question whether airport security is being compromised. Still, Harveldt says he doesn’t believe the TSA would make this change if the agency “didn’t feel it was authentically, truly safe.”

What of expedited security lines?

If shoe regulations disappear and liquid restrictions are eased, the effects could ripple into the TSA PreCheck program, in which passengers submit information like their fingerprints and the agency prescreens them for any red flags. By giving the agency this information, the traveler then gets some benefits not available to other travelers — a special line to go through and the ability to keep their computers in their bags and their shoes on, for example.

But if those benefits become more widely available to all passengers, will fewer people sign up for PreCheck?

“What is the impact on now both shoes and liquids going to have on TSA PreCheck enrollment? That is the million-dollar question,” Jeffries said. “And if I was still with TSA, I would be watching that closely over the next 12 to 18 months.”

While the prospect of increasing the current liquid limit could be a welcome change for many U.S. travelers, some experts say that the tech isn’t available in enough airports yet. Current X-ray machines used at most airports today have a difficult time distinguishing between different types of liquids, says Jeffrey Price, a professor of aviation at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

That’s key, he explains, in determining whether something is harmless or potentially explosive.

While newer computed tomography scanners are better and have begun making their way to airports, Price said in commentary published last week that it could take “another decade or more” before the newer machines are deployed at all U.S. airports.

“This is an issue that needs to be studied much more carefully than the policy to leave your shoes on,” he said in an email Thursday.

Onboard Experience

Additionally, in the coming months, a majority of aircraft will receive a dedicated 'Spotify' featured channel where all Spotify content will be housed together for quick and easy enjoyment.

On Starlink-equipped aircraft, travelers can stream Spotify content on their personal devices from gate-to-gate without interruption. All they will need to do is log in to their MileagePlus® account and accept the terms and conditions for using Starlink. From there, travelers can open their Spotify app and stream content, just like they do at home.

Collaboration Beyond the Skies

To celebrate the launch, MileagePlus members who are new to Premium Individual can sign up for a subscription and earn up to 1,000 bonus miles. Real ID Enforcement to Begin May 7 as Planned, TSA and DHS Say

In case you were expecting the Real ID enforcement date—currently set for May 7—to be pushed back one more time, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) say that will not be happening.

The federal agencies this week announced a final rule regarding the implementation of Real ID enforcement at airports. Notably, the enforcement date has not changed from May 7, 2025 and the rule finalized the two-year phased period in which agencies may begin card-based enforcement provisions.

What this means: Beginning May 7, Americans traveling domestically via commercial air will need a Real ID to board. As of now, according to the TSA, approximately 56 percent of driver’s licenses in circulation nationally are REAL ID-compliant. It adds that in 34 States, less than 60 percent of IDs in circulation are compliant, and, of those, 22 states have less than 40 percent compliancy.

It's important to note that the DHS does not plan on any future delays, saying, “Because of a history of REAL ID deadlines being extended, DHS believes that the public may continue to expect that additional extensions are likely and not feel urgency to obtain a REAL ID-compliant card. DHS believes this lack of urgency is likely to delay increased adoption in many States despite best efforts to inform the public, potentially leading to last-minute surges in demand for REAL ID-compliant IDs leading up to the deadline.”

Due to this potential surge in last-minute applications, TSA and DHS have determined a two-year phasing-in process will be most beneficial to agencies (airports in particular), which can begin enforcement “tailored to their specific operations.”

The rule will require agencies that use this phased approach to make their plan publicly available on their web page. DHS will also be required to have a publicly available a list of agencies that have coordinated phased enforcement plans.

On Thursday, October 19, the US State Department issued a worldwide travel advisory urging American citizens to “exercise increased caution” while overseas, “due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, [and] demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.”

The alert comes as the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas escalates in the Middle East. According to the New York Times, the advisory is also in response to protests worldwide that have, in some cases, led to “violent clashes at U.S. diplomatic compounds.” Throughout this week, protesters all over the world have held demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, calling for an end to Israel’s airstrikes and blockade of the territory, according to the AP. There are also protests in New York City calling for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, and in Washington, DC calling for President Biden to press for an Israel-Hamas war cease-fire.

But what does the State Department's warning mean for anyone currently traveling, or with an upcoming trip? And does it actually suggest that you shouldn't travel… at all?

The short answer is no. But the advisory is a fair reminder to do exactly as it instructs, which is, for the time being, to be cautious while in environments unfamiliar to you.

“I don’t think the advisory is asking people to cancel their planned travel, but it is asking us all to be more alert when we are traveling,” says Mei Zhang, founder of the travel company WildChina and a member of Condé Nast Traveler’s Global Advisory Board. “To me, that means being more alert in airports, avoiding super crowded iconic tourist places, not having your eyes glued to your phone while traveling. Look around.” As a precaution, Zhang recommends signing up for the State Department’s STEP program, as well as keeping your friends and family informed of your travel plans. “Just take a little extra caution,” she says. “This is a good idea regardless of the warning.”

As for changing travel plans, Catherine Heald, the co-founder and CEO of the travel company Remote Lands, says that many of her clients have canceled their upcoming travel plans to Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan, among others, and pivoted their trips toward destinations geographically far away from active conflict zones. While reconsidering itineraries, Heald advises all travelers to not panic: “Look at the facts,” Heald says. “Study a map and avoid the danger zones. Buy travel insurance so if the situation spreads or escalates—and we all sincerely hope it won’t—you are covered.”

Luis Vargas, CEO and founder of travel operator Modern Adventure, recommends equipping yourself with information. Read up on the local news in the area of your intended destination to get a better sense of what’s actually happening on the ground. “In many cases, major events—both political and natural—are locally or regionally concentrated, meaning nearby areas can be unaffected,” Vargas says. For example, during and in the aftermath of the earthquake in Morocco in September, some communities experienced the worst of it, while Marrakech and other parts of the country were largely unaffected. An event in one part of a country or region does not mean it is happening everywhere in that country or region.

The last time the State Department issued a similar worldwide travel advisory was on August 2, 2022, due to a "higher potential for anti-American violence given the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri,” the al-Qaeda leader killed on July 31 in a US drone strike in Afghanistan.

The US State Department’s travel advisories are most often specified by country. This month, the State Department has raised the travel advisory for Lebanon to the highest level, “Level 4: Do not travel;” the travel advisory for Israel and the West Bank has been raised to “Level 3: Reconsider travel.” Jordan and Egypt, which share borders with Israel, are at Level 2 and Level 3, respectively.

Wherever you are headed, take stock of a number of factors before you cancel or reschedule any travel plans: Consider your destination’s relative risk and your own personal risk tolerance—and that of your travel companions. Evaluate the level of access you will have to consulate services and information, as well as to your own personal safety network; if you have friends and family in the area of your destination, ask them for tips on how to stay safe and up-to-date on local news developments.

From there, make an informed decision about your travel plans that you—and your travel companions, if you have them—will be comfortable with. Traveling is an exercise in preparedness. As with all trips, make sure you feel ready to navigate whatever may come your way, no matter where you go. And of course, follow the worldwide travel advisory’s directive, brief and broad as it may be, to “stay alert in locations frequented by tourists” and to “enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.”

Taking a long-term view, Vargas offers a reminder that tourism is an integral part of many economies—in the Middle East and all over the world. "When travel advisories are adopted, more broadly than intended, the effects can also be devastating over time,” says Vargas. If you aren't comfortable traveling now, consider postponing your trip rather than canceling it; and, if you must cancel, see if you can redirect some of your financial resources to organizations offering aid to people who need it most.

At the end of the day, “trust your gut,” Vargas says. “If you are feeling uneasy to the point where enjoyment of the trip is compromised, postponing may be the right choice for you.”

Egypt's enduring popularity

We entered the Great Pyramid of Giza through the Robber’s Tunnel. Our goal: the burial chamber of the pharaoh Khufu, the Fourth Dynasty ruler of Egypt’s Old Kingdom for whom this pyramid was built.

It didn’t matter that it was August, a month not typically considered in-season to visit Egypt (it’s hot). But the summer heat keeps the crowds at bay, our guides said.

And that was true inside the pyramid, as well. The small group I was with — on excursion from the Viking Aton, the newest ship in Viking’s Nile River fleet — passed only a few other people during our ascent through the cramped, waist-high passage and into the royal tomb.

It didn’t matter to me that all that remained in the (suffocatingly hot) chamber was an empty, chipped tomb or that there were no ancient wall carvings, no hieroglyphics nor mummified remains to be found. We were inside the Great Pyramid of Giza, the last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

It is, of course, a tomb. I thought about death. In that claustrophobic tunnel beneath many cubic tons of limestone (where, yes, I was sweating profusely), I considered my own death, and how my life might be remembered if the 4,500-year-old monument suddenly caved in.

When we got out and compared notes, it turned out those thoughts had been shared by just about everyone in the group. It was then that I thought about the line from the 1999 film “The Mummy”: “Death is only the beginning.”

Death is only the beginning of the enduring global fascination with Egypt. It’s why millions of tourists flock annually to see the mummified corpses, temples, monuments, tombs and other funerary artifacts dedicated to the afterlife of the great kings, queens and pharaohs who once ruled over an ancient civilization. Their deaths were treated not as solemn occasions but as grand exits to a new beginning.

And whether it’s funerary rituals or feats of architectural accomplishment, the fact remains that Egypt’s allure has not been lost to the sands of time. Suppliers say they’ve seen exponential growth in demand for the destination.

“2023 has been a fantastic year for Egypt thus far,” said Kelly Torrens, vice president of product for Kensington Tours. “We’re seeing record sales, up 108% over 2022 year to date and 353% over 2021 year to date. Egypt has consistently been our second-most popular country to visit worldwide, only behind Italy, for the last five years.”

Significant rise in bookings

EF Go Ahead Tours, which specializes in educational tours, said its bookings for travel to Egypt within the next six months are up more than 250% compared with the same period a year ago, while Alexander + Roberts said bookings are up 41% over 2022.

“Egypt is doing very well for us in 2023,” said Scott Avera, president of Alexander + Roberts, adding that he expects even higher growth in 2024 once the new Grand Egyptian Museum opens.

Multigenerational and solo travel are leading the way, suppliers say.

“We are seeing an increase in multigenerational families, specifically parents and grandparents bringing their children and grandchildren for graduation trips,” Avera said. “They’re joining our small groups and also booking our Privately Guided trips.”

Solo travelers have also been booking more Egypt itineraries with operators that offer itineraries curated with the solo traveler in mind as well as guided group trips that solo travelers are welcome to join.

Both EF Go Ahead Tours and Divorce Journeys, which organizes solo trips for women going through divorce, have launched new itineraries in the destination this year, citing increased demand.

Developing new, curated solo trips has proved very popular for the two brands. Both companies said solo travelers are asking to go to destinations that might typically be harder for them to reach and navigate on their own.

“We did some polling, asking, ‘Where would you love to go if you could and had people to travel with?’ And the two destinations that came up for us were Egypt and Morocco,” said Gabriella Ribeiro, founder of Divorce Journeys. “What we find is that people have a deep desire to see the pyramids and to be in the center of where so many things started.”

EF Go Ahead Tours said its Egypt trips attract a wide spectrum of travelers looking for something different. A new, nine-day solo itinerary in Egypt that takes guests to bucket-list attractions such as the Great Pyramid of Giza and the royal burial grounds of Saqqara is appealing to younger travelers with busy work schedules and limited vacation time.

“We are attracting history enthusiasts, cruisers, adventure travelers and multigenerational travelers,” said Lael Kassis, vice president of market innovation and development for EF Go Ahead Tours. “We attract more adventurous travelers booking multicountry tours in Northern Africa and the Middle East, including Egypt, Israel and Jordan.”

Cruising on the Nile

Most travelers who want to visit Egypt, suppliers say, want to experience both Egypt by land and on the Nile River, and so they have developed many options that combine the two. “We anticipated the boom in 2023 and added a third luxury ship on the Nile to add capacity,” Avera said, adding that Alexander + Roberts now offers the luxury Nile ships Oberoi Philae, Oberoi Zahra and Historia. But for guests who may not be interested in cruising or have sailed the waterway before, Alexander + Roberts has launched a seven-day Egypt by Land itinerary that will give travelers more time on the ground exploring sites and attractions in Cairo and Luxor. Kensington Tours has also launched new experiences for clients that combine land tours and river cruises to meet recent demand. The company collaborated with its most tenured tour guides to develop the Excavating the Valley of the Kings & Queens itinerary, which focuses on off-the-beaten-path archaeological experiences on the west bank of the Nile.

The tour features visits to Carter House, the home of the archaeologist who discovered King Tut’s tomb in 1922, as well as lunch at the site of the former Chicago House, which once played host to many renowned Egyptologists conducting active excavations.

“We conclude with a visit to Queen Nefertari’s Tomb, known for having the most vividly colored wall paintings of all,” Kensington’s Torrens said. “We see demand only increasing in 2024 as we anticipate the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum,” she added. “We’re currently offering exclusive early access tours for guests who would like a sneak peek.”

River cruising will also get a boost with the addition of new ships. Last month, Viking launched the Viking Aton, a sister ship to the Viking Osiris, which launched last year. The company plans to launch two more Nile ships over the next two years.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few more coming,” Torstein Hagen, Viking’s chairman, said during the Viking Aton’s August naming ceremony in Aswan. “I see huge potential here.”

And AmaWaterways will launch a second ship on the Nile next year, the AmaLilia, which will be a sister to the AmaDahlia, launched in 2021.

A strong comeback

The heightened demand that’s stimulating the growth of new product offerings in Egypt is good news for the country, coming after years of political instability in the 2010s, particularly after the Arab Spring of 2011 rocked much of the Muslim world, with pro-democracy uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East. Many demanded regime change. Whatever the outcome meant for political aspirations, they had a particularly damaging impact on Egypt’s tourism industry for years.

“Prior to the Arab Spring, Egypt had experienced a strong tourism recovery post-9/11,” said EF Go Ahead Tours’ Kassis. “But after the instability associated with the Arab Spring, demand to Egypt dropped. Many companies stopped offering tours in Egypt due to safety concerns.”

EF Go Ahead Tours didn’t return to Egypt until 2016.

And AmaWaterways didn’t return to until 2021. “Egypt stopped for almost 10 years,” said Rudi Schreiner, president and co-founder of AmaWaterways. “Now Egypt is coming back. There’s such huge pent-up demand because people couldn’t really travel to Egypt for 10 years.”

Educating travelers

Today, Egypt’s tourism industry is booming, with not only developments and investment in its tourism infrastructure but with what tour operators say is strong interest in all that the destination has to offer: history, culture and an eternal sense of wonder.

“The prism that guides me is our mission to open the world through education,” said Kassis, who added that the company strives to ensure a safe and communal environment for its guests while also helping them experience the entirety of the world, not just popular tourism destinations.

“Going off the beaten path, even to less developed nations, is a part of the equitable, inclusive and responsible tourism business we are trying to build as we seek to educate travelers — our customers — about places they visit,” she said.

TSA Expects This Day to Be the Busiest for Labor Day Weekend Travel — Tips for a Smooth Experience

More than 14 million passengers are expected to pass through airports across the United States over the Labor Day holiday weekend, with Friday forecasted to be the busiest day.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects to screen an incredibly high volume of travelers from Friday, Sept. 1, through Wednesday, Sept. 6, following a record-breaking summer. On Friday alone, the TSA anticipates more than 2.7 million travelers will pass through security checkpoints.

In fact, TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement he anticipates passenger numbers will be nearly 11 percent higher than the same time last year, and even higher than 2019.

“We are prepared for the increase in travel volumes and are working closely with our airline and airport partners to make sure we are maintaining our wait time standards of 30 minutes and under for standard screening lanes, and 10 minutes and under for TSA PreCheck lanes,” Pekoske said. “There are occasions where wait times may be longer, so we encourage you to arrive early, pack your patience and reach out to us before arriving to the airport if you have any questions on our security procedures or items you may bring.”

To make getting through the airport a smoother process, there are a few proactive steps travelers can take. The first is to give yourself plenty of time so the likely long lines aren’t as stressful as they could be otherwise. Most airlines recommend arriving at the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight (since they typically board earlier).

Of course, getting through security tends to be faster for travelers with TSA PreCheck, the agency’s expedited security program that allows travelers to leave their shoes, belts, and light jackets on and leave their laptops and liquids in their bags.

That said, the TSA recommends travelers know what they can and can’t bring through security ahead of time to speed up the process for everyone. Travelers can check the agency’s online “What Can I Bring?” tool or ask the TSA by tweeting “@AskTSA” or sending a Facebook message to “AskTSA.” Officers are available in real-time from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

The TSA has also been rolling out new technology like the Credential Authentication Technology (CAT), which allows travelers to get through security without having to show a boarding pass or, in some cases, even a physical ID.

Concerned officials urge visitors to come to Maui

Each morning, Jason and Sabrina Rosenbloom anticipate waking up to new cancellations for their Maui-based eco-friendly kayaking tour company, Gabriel’s Ohana.

Named after the couple’s youngest son, Gabriel, the small family-run business has lost more than 95% of its bookings since the devastating West Maui fires that started on Aug. 8 and left more than 100 people dead, thousands missing and the historic town of Lahaina in ashes.

Before the fires, the family would operate full tours of 20 guests at about eight to 10 bookings a day. As of Monday, the business has done only two tours.

In the immediate aftermath of the fires, tens of thousands of tourists evacuated the island. Social media messaging soon told tourists “to not travel to Maui” so resources could be used for residents who lost everything.

People heeded the call. Images and videos on social media show Maui’s once-bustling – and arguably overcrowded – resorts and beaches nearly empty. To many, it’s reminiscent of the COVID-19 shutdown. The week after the fires, Maui hotel occupancy rates dropped 27.6%. Over the past week, daily passenger arrivals to Maui dropped 80%.

It’s all causing a strain for locals who depend on tourism.

“With the unexpected and quick shutdown of the island, our whole household is now without an income,” Sabrina Rosenbloom said.

Now, a few weeks later, many people – including Hawaii Gov. Josh Green – are pleading for visitors to come and support Maui's economy.

Though West Maui, including Lahaina, Napili, Kaanapali and Kapalua, remains closed, the Hawaii Tourism Authority “encourages travelers” to visit other areas of Maui, like Hana and Kihei.

Some tourists are ready to step up and help Maui’s local businesses in need, but it’s complicated to travel to a place where devastation and loss of human life recently occurred. Meanwhile, at stake are the livelihoods of many Maui locals because the island is so dependent on tourism.

“Things are going to be dire soon if travelers don't return quickly,” she said. “What's worse, we have the ability and resources to employ numerous people who have lost jobs due to the fire, but now there is not enough work to help our own family, let alone our neighbors.”

If Gabriel’s Ohana continues to suffer, the family will default on the loans they took out for their business, won’t make their bills and could lose their home, Jason Rosenbloom said.

Many people are wondering if they should continue with their upcoming trips to Maui. Some have voiced concerns about feeling strange being at hotels alongside families who lost their homes. They worry they’ll be treated poorly in a place with a contentious history with overtourism. Others just canceled their trips altogether.

Some locals and Hawaiians continue to criticize the idea of vacationing on Maui right now.

“First and foremost, we need to acknowledge that what happened was tragic and we can’t pretend that that didn’t happen,” said Ilihia Gionson at the Public Affairs Office of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The loss from the deadly inferno is difficult to measure and includes many lives, historical and cultural sites and families’ homes.

“The two most important things to pack on a trip to Maui at this time are patience and grace, understanding that people have lost a lot,” Gionson said. “It’s a balance, right? If you just lost your house, we don’t want you to lose your job, too. And there are going to be some people who aren’t ready to return to work.”

HTA is letting the Maui community take the lead on what it needs to heal. The agency has been hosting community gatherings in West Maui, asking its residents “to define what recovery looks like, rebuilding looks like, to the extent that tourism is involved,” Gionson said.

Tourists "should respect the ask from the community to give them their space and give them some time,” he said.

Lisa Tam-Hoy Robbins, a Native Hawaiian entrepreneur whose grandfather is from Maui, says asking visitors to spend their dollars at local businesses goes beyond just tourism; it's everyone coming together to support Maui and its people.

Delta Air Lines record $1.8 billion profit as summer vacationers pack planes

Delta Air Lines soared to a record quarterly profit of more than $1.8 billion as summer vacationers packed planes, especially to international destinations, and the airline enjoyed a tailwind from falling fuel prices.

The results released Thursday beat Wall Street expectations, and Delta raised its forecast of full-year earnings.

Delta officials said strong demand for tickets has continued at the beginning of the July-through-September quarter when it expects revenue similar to the record second quarter, and even into the December holidays.

“I think it’s going to be more of the same,” CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview. “International bookings, which traditionally start to trail off into the fall, are still going to be at a higher level than normal.”

Revenue on flights between the U.S. and Europe, Delta’s most important overseas market, soared 65%. The airline will run its European summer schedule longer than normal to take advantage of American tourists who are overrunning the place after staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Savanthi Syth, an airline analyst for Raymond James, said Delta’s comments are positive for rivals American and United, which also get a large chunk of revenue from international flights. Last year, when travel to many countries was still restricted, domestic-looking airlines such as Southwest benefitted.

A key part of Delta’s strategy involves pursuing high-income travelers, whom it says account for three-fourths of all spending on air travel. Drawing on government and private research, Delta says high-income households have accumulated $27 trillion in wealth since 2019.

“They have the means, and when we ask them where they are going to spend, their No. 1 priority is premium travel experience,” Bastian said. “That’s our bread and butter.”

In the second quarter, Delta’s revenue from sales of premium seats and services rose 25% — better than the 18% gain in the main cabin.

Airlines need more revenue to remain profitable in part because they are facing sharply higher labor costs. Earlier this year, Delta pilots won a new contract that their union says will boost average pay 34% over four years and cost Delta more than $7 billion.

Across the airline industry, companies have hired aggressively to rebuild work forces that they shrunk after the pandemic hit the United States in early 2020. Industry officials say all that hiring should help airlines run better than they did last summer.

Canceled flights have returned closer to historical norms — 2% of all scheduled flights since June 1, according to FlightAware. Delta’s cancellation rate of 1.2% is better than average but well above Alaska and Southwest and slightly higher than rival American Airlines — and four times Delta’s rate during the same period before the pandemic.

Bastian said the figures mostly reflected disruptions caused by storms along the East Coast last month. He said operations should be smoother the rest of the summer.

Bastian declined to join others — notably, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby and JetBlue Airways President Joanna Geraghty — in blaming the Federal Aviation Administration, which is struggling to fix a shortage of air traffic controllers. Rather, he said it was critical for airlines not to schedule too many flights — and think about obstacles “including those things you don’t control, such as air traffic control.”

Delta’s profit compared with earnings of $735 million in the second quarter of 2022. The quarter broke Delta’s previous record for net income, set in the second quarter of 2016.

The airline said adjusted profit, which excludes some one-time items, was $2.68 per share. Analysts expected $2.40 per share, according to a survey by FactSet.

Delta raised its forecast of full-year earnings per share by $1, to between $6 and $7.

Revenue rose 13% to $15.58 billion. Adjusted revenue, which excludes the company’s oil refinery near Philadelphia, was $14.63 billion, enough to beat analysts’ prediction of $14.44 billion.

The average flight was 88% full in the second quarter, one point better than a year ago. Delta doesn’t provide figures for average fares, but passengers paid 2% more per mile.

Labor was Delta’s biggest expense, at $3.7 billion, a one-year increase of nearly $740 million, but that was offset by lower fuel prices, which saved Delta a little more than $700 million even though its planes burned 16% more fuel.

Airline stocks, which struggled last year, have rebounded in 2023. Delta shares were little changed in midday trading. They are up 46% so far this year.
